Piastraia is a Bolgheri DOC Superiore 2017 made by Michele Satta in Toscana.
The vineyard which produces this wine was planted in 1991 with Merlot, Cabernet, Sangiovese and Syrah, with the intention of expressing an affirmation of the highest quality from the Bordelaise Varietals planted in Bolgheri, combined with the ability of elegance throughout the Tuscan Sangiovese and the complexity of the Mediterranean Syrah.
When tasted in March 2021, the nose was initially shy, but opened first with warm spice (clove, nutmeg) and soft notes of mushroom, forest floor, dried grass and Mediterranean maquis. Crisper red fruit flavours (cranberry, raspberry, strawberry) became more apparent as the wine breathed. Sangiovese, combined with the Bolgheri growing conditions, bring refreshing acidity. Tannins were were not completely integrated, though pleasantly grippy. This is still a young wine and will develop for 20 years. The 2017 Piastraia represents excellent value for the cellar.
Separate vinifications were completed in conical oak barrels of 30hl, before blending and maturing in French oak (2/5 new) for 18-24 months.
